Roses and their Sources

August 20th, 2010 Posted in Flower Information

Most consumers purchase products online or in physical stores without knowing much about the origin of the product.  Sadly to say, this happens for most products that are purchased and the trend is increasing with so many products of ours being sourced from overseas.   With competition so fierce in the marketplace,  retailers turn to suppliers who will offer the lowest prices, and herein lies the problem. So, how do Roses and flowers in general fit in with all this?

Star Florist purchases it’s Roses from two of Melbourne’s largest local Rose growers.   Grandiflora Roses and Boon Roses.  They are synonymous with quality Roses and we can always ensure that we are supplied with daily cut Roses.   There are however florists that use Imported Roses. Roses from Peru, Equador, Chile and other parts of the world.  They are significantly cheaper than local Roses and there is a reason for this.   They are freeze packed tightly in boxes and sent by aeroplane.  Delays in flight times and at customs can leave the Roses stranded in these boxes for days without water.   To make matters worse, once the Roses arrive at Melbourne Customs they are inspected and must be fumigated.  Fumigation is a method of pest control that completely fills an area with poisonous gaseous pesticides—or fumigants—to suffocate or poison the pests within.  Residue from these Roses may even create allergies for sensitive people.  For all these reasons combined you can see why imported Roses have a very short lifespan and why Star Florist has absolutlety no affiliation with importers or wholesalers of importers.

When using Star Florist, you can be sure that we only use fresh locally grown Melbourne Roses.

Self Raising Flower Joke

August 10th, 2010 Posted in Humour

Tom and his wife Grace were attending a Marriage Seminar dealing with communication. The instructor there stated that, “It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other.”

The instructor addressed Tom and said to him, “Can you describe your wife’s favourite flower?”

Tom leaned over, touched his wife’s arm gently and whispered, “It’s self-raising, isn’t it?”

Snapdragon Season

August 2nd, 2010 Posted in Flower Information

Although Winter is not associated with new life and blossoming flowers like Spring, there are several flowers that do blossom Snapdragonsduring these cold months of the year.  One of these is the Snapdragon.  Personally, the Snapdragon is a favourite of mine.  It has colourful scented flowers spread across an elongated stem and comes in the most diverse range of bright colours, including Hot Pink, Yellow, Red, Orange, White, Lemon and more.  Many of our products do not include Snapdragons because they are seasonal and only available for a short time, but we do stock them for customers that call us and would like something different or seasonal.  They are great for gifts or even dropping down to your local Melbourne florist and collecting some for your home.  They are long lasting, and really do have a spectacular array of colours available.  Children enjoy picking off the flowers and squeezing the sides to make it look as though a dragon is opening and closing it’s mouth.

Which Flowers for which Occasion?

Unsure what to select?

We often get many customers calling us unsure about which flowers are most suitable for an occasion.  There are some general guidelines we like to follow and we will list a few here today:

  • Roses symbolise love, this could be love of a partner, a mothers love, a friends love etc.  Roses are not necessarily for anniversaries only. The choice in colour will determine the occasion.  Please visit our Roses Colour chart to learn more.
  • For a bereavment, it’s best to keep to pastel tones, whites etc.  Nothing too bright. To learn more about suitable colours for  Sympathy flower arrangements click here.
  • Birthdays are always a cheery time and lots of bright colours and assorted flowers are most suitable.
  • The same with get well soon flowers ensure there is a good mixture of colour and something to cheer up the recipient.
  • Gifts for new born babies can be in Pink flowers for girls or Blue flowers for boys.   Baby Gifts can also be in the form of baby hampers. This includes baby clothes bundled with other gifts in packaged boxes.  Nappy Cakes are also an  alternative to buying fresh flowers, they are relatively new in the market and offer something different.

We have done our best to catalog our products in categories to help make your selection easier, but remember there is really no wrong or right.  If you’re looking for something for a birthday and find a product you like in the get well soon category, then it comes down to personal preference and there is nothing wrong with this. Happy Shopping!
